Manchester United drop points at Old Trafford as Carabao Cup clash with Barnsley goes to penalties

Erik ten Hag made wholesale changes to his Manchester United side for their Carabao Cup third-round clash with Barnsley, but the Reds were held to a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford and were ultimately beaten on penalties.

The Dutchman made 11 changes to the team that beat Arsenal 3-1 on Sunday, with only David de Gea, Lisandro Martinez and Bruno Fernandes keeping their places.

But despite having 70% possession and taking 29 shots on goal, United were unable to find a breakthrough against a resolute Barnsley side who defended deep and hit United on the break.

The Reds thought they had won it in the dying seconds when Scott McTominay headed home from a corner, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

United went on to lose the penalty shootout 5-3, with De Gea saving one spot-kick but missing his own.

Team news

As mentioned, ten Hag made 11 changes to his starting line-up for the match against Barnsley.

The only players to keep their places from the team that beat Arsenal were De Gea, Martinez and Fernandes.

The rest of the team was made up of a mixture of youth and experience, with Zidane Iqbal, Facundo Pellistri and Alejandro Garnacho all starting.

Match updates

United started the match brightly and created a number of chances in the opening stages.

The best chance fell to Garnacho, who was played through on goal by Fernandes, but the young winger fired wide.

Barnsley grew into the game as the first half went on and had a couple of chances of their own, with Luke Thomas going close with a header.

The second half was a similar story, with United having the majority of the possession but struggling to create clear-cut chances.

Barnsley continued to defend deep and hit United on the break, but they were unable to find a goal.

The match went to penalties, with De Gea saving one spot-kick but missing his own.

United ultimately lost the shootout 5-3, meaning they are out of the Carabao Cup.
