Austria's Minister of the Interior, Gerhard Karner, has reported a significant decline in the number of people caught attempting to cross into the country illegally. In an interview with German newspaper Die Welt, Karner stated that Austrian authorities have detained fewer individuals in recent months compared to previous periods.

Government Pushes for Criminal Transfers

The Austrian government is advocating for the transfer of non-EU nationals who have been convicted of crimes to Kosovo to serve their sentences. This proposal seeks to alleviate pressure on Austria's prison system and facilitate the integration of offenders into their home countries.

Austria's Stance on Border Protection

Karner has emphasized the importance of robust external border protection measures. He has requested legal and technical support from the European Commission to strengthen border controls and prevent illegal crossings. The majority of illegal immigrants apprehended in Austria originate from Afghanistan, India, Syria, Tunisia, and Pakistan.

Migration Agreement with the UK
